Science: Zoology: Megalodon Shark

This prehistoric super shark, "big tooth" in Greek, fed on large marine animals.

Scientists believe that Megalodon was the largest, most powerful fish to ever exist. People used to find fossil megalodon teeth and mistake them for dragon tongues, until a naturalist recognized them as shark similar to the Great White.

Because the megalodon's skeleton was formed mostly of cartilage rather than bone, few fossils remain, but some fossils have been found in many parts of the world, including N. America. Large whale bones have been found with signs of megalodon shark bite, and sometimes even with teeth actually embedded in them.

Scientist believe that megalodon became extinct in the Pleistocene epoch about 1.5 million years ago.
